Do you love your job?

happy work I was reading an article from the Harvard Business Review on what success means to you.  As I read I thought back on a time in my life when I was able to make a career change. I was fortunate enough to have a mentor at the time who helped me by walking me through the process of finding out what type of work would really bring me the most satisfaction in life. She had me review the different stages in my life and the things that made me feel great accomplishment and pride. Then we looked at what it was about those accomplishments that brought the happiness. We came up with three themes that seemed to run in my life. The work that day made a huge difference in what I do today. I have to say that I love what I do. To me when I walk out at the end of a client engagement I am filled with happiness at the impact the work we have done together will have on their companies. Jim Collins in his book “Good to Great” talks about getting the right people on the bus and then getting them in the right seat. Denis Waitley in his book “Empires of the Mind” asks what would life be like if you were doing the job you are perfectly suited to your skills and capabilities. It would be difficult to re-arrange your company with the people you have, however, what if you hired not only on past skills but also aptitude and passion for a specific role?  What would it be like to manage a staff that loved what they do and can’t wait to come to work each day? What would your days be like if you walked out of the door at the end of the day thinking “Man I love this job!”?
